Explosion at Slim Jim Plant Leaves Several Missing, Seriously Injured

Work Injury

Industrial accidents almost always leave a wake of destruction behind, and today was no different as an explosion ripped through a Slim Jim plant in North Carolina, leaving three workers critically injured and two still missing as of this report.  Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of workplace occurrences such as this one is that those who are near the danger zone rarely have any warning whatsoever.

According to CNN:

“The explosion, reported about 11:30 a.m., caused sections of the roof to collapse at the ConAgra Foods plant in Garner, Mayor Ronnie Williams said.

“There was no warnings, no signs,” Williams said. “It all happened very abruptly.”

Earlier, authorities reported three workers were missing. But one of the three was located and transported to a hospital, Garner police spokesman Joe Binns said. It was unclear where that person was found.

The two missing workers were believed to be inside the ConAgra building, but officials could not confirm that.

Rescuers were waiting for firefighters to contain an ammonia leak before they could search the plant for the workers, Binns said.

At least 38 people were transported to area hospitals, said Jeff Hammerstein, district chief for Wake County Emergency Medical Services. No fatalities were immediately reported.”

One thing that’s clear is that it could be awhile before all of the damage is totaled and all of the fatalities tallied.  It could also be some time before any cause of the blast is determined.  As of now, no evacuations have been ordered as no reports of hazardous material leaks have been issued.
