Lately there have been a slew of crane-related deaths in New York, Miami, and Las Vegas. Because of this history there has been a crack down on safety precautions for sites that use this massive machinery.
In Houston, Texas Friday there was a serious crane accident leaving six injured and four killed. Two of the injured workers in critical conditions were taken by Life Flight. One was taken by ambulance and three others were treated at the site.
The four workers killed in the accident were contract employees and have yet to be identified.
Apparently, the crane fell on top of the Lyondell-Citgo refinery. During a test just a couple of days ago, this same crane picked up about 800,000 pounds. This type of crane usually can pick up one million pounds. It was a new crane and wasn’t scheduled to be used yet. The company was setting up the crane and ready to do some routine maintenance on one of the units of the refinery.
This day there were more workers than normal present since the company was dealing with a lot of turn around. There were about 3,000 people at the site which included hundreds of contractors. They were all present during the time of the accident.
Accidents that happen on a job site needs extensive investigation in order to identify what went wrong and to therefore be able to have steps in place to prevent the same or similar accidents from happening again.
