Massachusetts - There are planes that are designated as an “Angel Flight.” These flights take patients to where they need medical treatment when they are unable to afford the transportation. Tuesday morning, one of the “Angel Flights” went down.
There were three aboard the plane: the volunteer pilot and a couple from Long Island. The plane left Westhampton Beach on New York’s Long Island heading for Boston’s Logan International Airport to then be transported to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute where the man will be treated.
The single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza crashed down in the parking lot of a Hannaford grocery store. All three died in the crash. The plane actually went down in the area of the parking lot that is not used very frequently so no cars were hit.
The plane crashed about 500 feet away from the front door of the store. The store manager Arthur Dechellis said that he didn’t see the actual crash but heard it, “I didn’t see it, I just heard an explosion,” he said. “When I looked outside, it was on fire.” He kept his store open.
The plane was owned by Janet Keene. Her husband said that the plane was part of an inheritance and is used for an “Angel Flight” once a month. He is unaware of any issues with the plane.
The names of the couple and pilot have not been released.
