Pedicabs are a popular choice for transportation for visitors to different cities around the country. For some, they are a good way to see a place while not having to walk, and in other situations, they are an option for those who may want to avoid driving. They are typically inexpensive and are driven by young bike riders who know the routes instinctively. This does not mean that mistakes are not made, however, and some of them carry tragic consequences.
This appears to be what happened to an Illinois woman visiting San Diego, according to San Diego 6:
“Sharon Miller and her husband were visiting San Diego for the National Education Conference when she and another woman decided to take a pedicab ride on the Fourth of July, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
At about 11:40 a.m. Saturday, the driver of the three-wheel vehicle made a sudden move in the 100 block of Harbor Drive and Miller fell out, hitting her head on the sidewalk, San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said.
Miller suffered a closed head injury and was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where she was pronounced brain dead at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.”
Miller’s family kept her on life support while they investigated and managed organ donation, but this is obviously a terrible situation that no one close to her saw coming. This only highlights the fact that things can go horribly wrong at any time and in any place, and when this does occur, those responsible need to be held accountable.
