Almost everyone looks forward to Memorial Day weekend for many reasons. It’s an opportunity to take an extra day off for yourself, to see your loved ones and friends, and of course to hit the road and jump into the unofficial start of summer with a bang. Millions of people travel somewhere every year over this holiday, and one of the truly unfortunate aspects of this massive transportation issue is that it can be extremely dangerous.
It’s always the case on the days that follow such a holiday weekend that reports begin to generate from locations around the country that relay statistics regarding auto accidents, DUI arrests and fatalities that result from the dangerous mix of high traffic volume, lack of familiarity for many drivers and the presence of drugs and/or alcohol in the system of some who should not be behind the wheel.
One such report was released by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune this morning, which reported that 12 people were killed in Minnesota on Friday, Saturday and Sunday alone:
“At least three people, including a 2-year-old boy, remained hospitalized late Monday with critical injuries following a string of Memorial Day weekend accidents that killed 12 people on Minnesota roads.
The fatal accidents occurred Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Minnesota State Patrol spokesman Lt. Matt Langer said Monday evening, adding that based on reports at 8 p.m., Memorial Day itself was free of fatal crashes. A check at 5:15 a.m. today found no additional fatal crashes reported by the patrol.”
We expect many more of these troubling reports to be released from different locations as this week progresses.
